QLD State XC Relays

Eleven teams comprising of 2 Golds, 2 Silvers, 1 Bronze and two 4th place finishers, Byron Bay Runners were a dominant force at the Queensland State Athletics Championships. Perfect weather conditions set the scene for great racing and of the 15 BBR runners who competed in last years edition of the event, all 15 ran PBs this year, showing that a year of consistency and dedication has paid off.

Race highlights included the Under 18 Boys Gold medal. Training partners Tyler Dogan and Robbie Mumford are in fantastic form which translated into impressive times over the 3km course with their final team member, Connor McGreevy running up an age group and showed he is one to watch for the future, matching it with the older boys.

The Men’s Open team finished with an unexpected silver medal as the team compromised of athletes who were returning after long injury lay-offs. Finn Crethar lead the team out, running the fastest time for the club indicating he is not far off the form that saw him previously as one of the country’s best Junior athletes. Finn was supported by Anthony Boyle who is only a couple of weeks back from injury and still ran sub 10 minutes off limited training and Marko Hrubyj-Piper who returned to training 1 week ago.

The Under 14 girls were impressive with all three girls being at the bottom of the age group and new recruit Mila Poulsen running an age up. The girls who consisted of Alex Dogan, Mila Poulsen and Sofia McGreevy were in the mix for the medals for most of the race and narrowly missed the podium but will be a force in the same age group next year.

Wyana Petrimale-Sewell was dominant in the women’s 3km across all age groups, running a huge PB in excess of 1 minute, Luke Dogan ran a strong first leg in the Under 12 boys, handing over in 1st position and Sienna Rooney made a welcome return to racing, also taking over a minute off her time from last year.

In the last event on the program, Byron’s Masters teams showed they are some of the best runners in the State, with our Men’s 30+ teams battling it out amongst themselves for first and second with the lead changing hands multiple times over the course of the race. Our Men’s 50+ team found themselves on the podium for the second year in a row and our women’s 30+ team just missed the podium with a 4th placing.

Thank you to all the parents and athletes who made the commute North for the event.
