QLD State XC Relays

Byron Bay Runners headed north to contest the Queensland State Cross Country Relay Championships at Nudgee College on June 18th. Many of our athletes across all age groups had not participated in Cross Country or the relay format so were unfamiliar with the race environment. Teams of 3 runners compete across multiple age groups with the first team home across the line is deemed the winner.

The club had 8 teams competing from Under 10s right through to the Masters 50+ age group, making it a wonderful family event. Our Under 10 girls were the first to kick off the racing action with Molly Wade, Indiana Thompson and little sister Willow racing up 3 age groups, racing over 1200m each. The girls ran their hearts out to finish in 8th position. The under 12 boys and under 14 girls team raced over 2km with the boys team finishing 5th and the girls 6th. Well done to Sofia McGreevy who raced in the boys under 12 team after other team members fell ill.

The under 16 boys, under 18 girls and 30+ men’s team raced over 3000m and all three teams narrowly missed the podium finishing in 4th position. The clubs 50+ men’s and women’s teams consisting of Peter Link, Scott Sewell and Gary Leckie in the mens and Sandra Killen, Caroline Bailey and Deb Fuller came away as State bronze medalists competing against arguably the toughest and biggest fields of the day.

Congratulations to all the runners and parents for being a part of the day and many of our runners who ran up age groups and the girls who raced with the boys. We juggled ongoing illness throughout the lead up to the event and it was lovely to see so many athletes volunteer to help out their team mates.
